Mitigating Risk with Electrical Safety Services

At D.L. Steiner, safety is the core attribute of a truly healthy energy system. D.L. Steiner’s Safety Services help ensure your energy systems present no danger to people, products, or equipment.

  • Safety-focused system design – Whether you’re engineering a new energy system or retrofitting an existing one, D.L. Steiner can help you make safety an integral part of its design.
    • Our system fault solutions – current-limiting breakers and fuses, maintenance switches (RELT and ARMS), and high-resistance grounds – prevent minor system abnormalities from becoming major system hazards.
    • With our EPPM (electrical predictive, preventative maintenance) program, you can identify and correct equipment performance issues before they lead to dangerous failures and breakdowns.
    • Our “levels” approach to arc flash incident energy analysis means your personnel can be confident they are wearing the right PPE for the safety risks they face.
  • Turnkey NFPA 70E-compliant arc flash study – From data collection to completion of the required system studies (short circuit, protective device coordination, equipment evaluation) to installation of equipment safety labels, D.L. Steiner’s arc flash study service adheres to all elements of the NFPA 70E electrical safety standard, giving you a comprehensive turnkey solution for arc flash hazard safety in the workplace.
  • Electrical safety training –  D.L. Steiner’s electrical safety training courses equip your personnel with the knowledge they need to work safely. Our four-hour course teaches the essentials of the NFPA 70E safety standard. Our eight-hour course takes a deeper look at many of the topics discussed in the four-hour course and also stresses practical application. A custom-designed medium-voltage course is also available for those who work with voltages of 1,000 VAC or more.
  • Electrical Safety Plan  – An effective electrical safety plan (ESP) is the foundation of workplace electrical safety. Whether you don’t have an ESP or you need to update your existing one, D.L. Steiner can develop an ESP for you that addresses all areas critical to protecting your personnel from electrical dangers as they take equipment out of service, perform maintenance and repair operations, and place it back online.
  • Lock out/tag out program – During equipment shutdowns, D.L. Steiner’s lock out/tag out (LOTO) program protects your personnel from hazardous energy that may be present within the equipment. Under this program, we develop a procedure for each machine, listing its energy sources and control points, and also explaining how to dissipate any stored energy, how to LOTO the machine so it can’t be started, and how to verify machine isolation. For each machine, its procedure is laminated and installed on the machine itself, and energy source tags are installed at all energy control points.

Machine guarding review – Machines with moving parts and inadequate protective guarding can injure personnel in various ways, including burns, cuts, fractures, and amputation. D.L. Steiner’s machine guarding review identifies guarding deficiencies in your machines and designs solutions to eliminate these, using the appropriate method from the five general types of machine guarding: contact-preventing guards, access-limiting devices, auto feeding-ejection mechanisms, machine location-distance, and miscellaneous aids (e.g., shields and awareness barriers).
