Proper Care of Rubber Insulated Gloves

Rubber insulated gloves are a critical component of electrical personal protective equipment (PPE). Designed to protect workers from electric shock and arc flash hazards, these gloves provide a nonconductive barrier between workers and energized electrical equipment, significantly reducing the risk of exposing them to serious injury or even death.

The continued effectiveness of rubber insulated gloves, however, depends on them receiving proper care and maintenance. Why? Because if they are neglected and damaged, even small punctures and cracks or contamination of various types can compromise their insulating value placing workers in dangerous, even deadly, electrical situations out on the shop floor.

Regular inspections—both visual and air testing—before each use are essential to ensuring proper glove performance. When not in use, rubber insulating gloves should be properly stored, away from heat, sunlight, and harsh chemicals that can degrade their rubber. Maintaining rubber insulated gloves in a safe working condition is not just a compliance requirement; it is a life-saving practice that ensures the integrity of the last line of defense against electrical hazards.
